Compliance, Liability and Real-World Consequences
Why Fire Detection Standards Can’t Be Overlooked
Fires on construction sites and in vacant or poorly secured commercial properties continue to result in major financial and legal fallout.
According to Home Office figures, the UK recorded over 300 construction-related fires in the last year, many of which were preventable. The cost of fire-related damage is estimated to exceed £1b annually.
In March 2025, a property management firm was fined £160,000 for failing to install adequate fire detection systems in an empty office complex, leading to extensive structural damage and endangering emergency responders.
Construction sites are especially vulnerable due to the presence of combustible materials, incomplete fire safety systems and limited occupancy, all of which delay detection and increase impact.
Missed or delayed alerts also expose site owners and managers to claims, prosecution and reputational damage. Enforcement notices issued by the HSE frequently cite inadequate fire protection as a breach of CDM 2015 Regulations.
WCCTV’s AI-driven smoke and fire detection system offers a faster and more reliable way to detect threats and take action, eliminating the need for human oversight or slow-reacting physical sensors.
