Case Study Background
UK Power Networks is one of the largest distribution network operators in the UK, covering approximately 30,000km extending from Wash in the East to Littlehampton on the Sussex coast, delivering power to about eight million customers.
It is responsible for maintaining and improving the network, ensuring that there is adequate capacity to support its customers' needs and providing a connections service.
UKPN also owns and operates the network of 180,000
The Challenge - Remote Site Security
Security of the network is a top priority for the company, but occasionally substations can be targeted by thieves and vandals, causing potential wide-spread disruption and inconvenience.
Many of UKPN's substations are also in remote locations and spread over multiple sites. Manned guarding was an initial option, but the cost of securing multiple remote sites quickly became restrictive.
The Solution - Managed CCTV Towers
UK Power Networks wanted to protect their sites using a thorough but economical method, so they turned to a technology-based solution.
Wireless CCTV was invited to complete surveys of the substations and provide a bespoke proposal to provide perimeter detection.
This led to UKPN opting to deploy several WCCTV’s HD Site Towers across their sites to provide a cost-effective, reliable and 24/7 security solution.
WCCTV provided a fully managed service to support the Towers, including installation, monitoring, maintenance, and on-going redeployments on request.
WCCTV’s Site Tower is designed to provide complete site security for utility sites where temporary or permanent security is required.
The 7m tall, bright yellow Site Tower provides a highly-visible deterrent, preventing trespass and intrusions on to sites before they occur.
The WCCTV Site Tower forms part of a proactive crime prevention security solution specifically designed for securing assets and perimeters and offering health and safety and project overview benefits.
As an all-in-one surveillance solution, the system contains wireless transmission (4G/3G and Wi-Fi) of video and alarms, a heavy-duty infrared, 360° pan, tilt and 36x zoom camera to allow a remote operator to capture images of any potential intruder, audio speakers to enable a remote challenge to occur and local recording capability for the storage of evidential footage.
Introducing the WCCTV site Tower onto substations had an immediate benefit for UKPN, with an intruder caught red-handed and deterred by the system.
UK Power Networks said:
“We have been impressed with the quality of the products and services provided by WCCTV. They have successfully detected the intrusion and prevented disruption to our sites, therefore preventing the disruption of electricity supplies to our customers”.
